Our First "REAL" Week

This week we will be following our REMOTE schedule linked below. While we have been teaching fourth-grade content, we'll turn our focus to the district's official curriculums now that routines have been established and essential tech skills have been introduced and practiced.

The students will begin "switching" classes. All the links that they need are available in CLEVER. They will visit my Zoom room for morning meeting, math, writing, their small groups (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff), and afternoon meeting. They will visit Mrs. Cote's Zoom room at 11:15 for reading most mornings (11:00 on Wednesday). They will visit Miss Chiarelli's Zoom room every day (except Wednesday) at 2:00 for either science or social studies. They will visit the appropriate specialist teacher's room for each special.

All links to Zoom rooms are also available in their homeroom Google Classroom.

Our REMOTE Schedule

Clock Alarms

Picture
We worked hard last week to set MANY clock alarms to prompt students to log into their classes. Simply remind your student to turn on his or her alarms in the morning and you shouldn't have to remind him or her to log into any classes for the rest of the day!

What is I.W.T.?

I.W.T. is Independent Work Time. The colored blocks are either HOUSE meeting times or I.W.T. They are no longer breaks. Nonetheless, if your child needs to take a break, a short break (5-10 minutes) could be taken during an I.W.T. block. What should your child be doing during an I.W.T block? There are SHORT assignments assigned after each core class in the corresponding Google Classroom. They shouldn't take the entire 30 minutes. Any spare time should be spent, silent reading, playing games in STMath, using Lexia, making art, or exercising.

Small Group or House Meetings

Every day, your child will have a small group meeting with Professors Brigham, Griswold, and Quimby. During this time we will reinforce skills learned in math and reading classes, as well as help students, manage the demands placed on them including assignment completion and working toward tech skill proficiency. Your witch or wizard only needs to attend his or her HOUSE meeting. When not in a House meeting, the colored blocks can be used for I.W.T. (Independent Work Time).

From our perspective, all the witches and wizards appear to be adapting well to life at HOGWARTS. However, we are well aware that some students work REALLY had to keep it together at "school" and then fall apart when they are home (off-screen). Please don't hesitate to contact us if your student is struggling or if there is information we should know to better help your child to thrive.

The First Three Days

We simply can't get over how well your witches and wizards transitioned into their fourth year at Hogwarts. Given all the challenges, it is amazing to consider all that they have already learned:
  • How to log in to Clever
  • How to board the Hogwarts Express (How to get into our class Zoom room)
  • How to use Clever to visit other Zoom classrooms
  • Zoom Tools: mute, reaction buttons, taking a poll, using the chat, sharing our screens, changing to a virtual background, navigating breakout rooms, and raising my hand to participate
  • Logging into Google Classroom
  • Google Classroom Skills: posting on the stream, finding an assignment, adding an attachment and submitting it as a completed assignment, opening a shared document, editing a shared document, posting an edited/shared document, and turning in the assignment.
  • Filling out a Google form.
  • Taking a photo with the iPad
  • Adding an image from the internet to the iPad's photos
We know it is hard to believe but we have been building our classroom culture and forming relationships in the Zoom room too. Breakout rooms, small group work done in Hogwarts houses, and activities designed with relationship building in mind are helping us to build community.

Our First Full Week

Our Schedule

This week we will be following the Student Remote Schedule. The only modification we will make to the schedule is that students will NOT be switching classes YET. That will begin next week. This week, they will be reporting to Professor Brigham's Zoom room for all math, writing, reading, science, and social studies blocks. You can access the schedule HERE.

There will be no substantial classwork or homework this week. We are continuing our focus on relationship building and technology skill acquisition. We will teach using district adopted curriculums beginning next week (Monday, September 28th).

Your first OWL!

Hello Witches and Wizards!

You guessed it!  The theme for this year is HARRY POTTER.  You might be wondering, "Why Potter?"  There are lots of good reasons why the fourth-grade teachers are excited about our theme.  Do you know what we've noticed in our line of work?  We've noticed that learning is magical and it truly unlocks a child’s POWER!  And, there is magic inside each of us...just waiting to be released. Sometimes it takes a true adventure to unearth our power.  Harry Potter seems like just the literary character to inspire, doesn't he?

But I haven't really answered the question, have I?  Much of children's literature is filled with magic and adventure. Many titles could inspire wonderful things in learners like us.  Why Potter?   I am a POTTERHEAD.  I have been since 1997. Do you know how I first encountered Harry and the magical school, Hogwarts?  A student.  A thoughtful and bright child gave me Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone as a gift.  This copy was published in the U.K. before the rights to the book were sold to Scholastic.  I have loved Harry, his friends, and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for over 20 years now.  I can't wait to share Harry’s magic with you this year.

You might be thinking, "Harry Potter?  Haven't they done that before?"  You might be interested to know that this team of fourth-grade teachers has taken on LOTS of themes.  From nautical to culinary, from Broadway to superheroes and even boardgames. we've enjoyed teaching with many different themes.  But, we have NEVER repeated a theme.  NEVER.  NOT ONCE...until two years ago.  Why are we repeating the Harry Potter theme for the third time? For one, it is AWESOME!  Mostly though, we're doing it because we all need a little MAGIC right now. Over the course of this magical year (yes!  It is going to be magical!), you will read the first two books, write to Harry, learn to play chess, or continue the study of the game, and if all goes REALLY well...learn to play Quidditch, and if lucky, win a house cup or two and taste some sweet butter beer. I know everyone will be a Potterhead in no time if you're not one already!

I am thrilled that you have been accepted into Hogwarts and have been sorted into BRIGHAM HALL! The GREAT news is that you'll have a team of professors working hard to bring out the magic lurking inside of you.  Of course, you'll have me, Professor Marie Brigham.  I'll be your primary teacher. You'll take the following courses with me: English Language Arts, Mathematics, some Science and some Social Studies units. I'll be co-teaching with special educator, Professor Griswold, who will be working, like me, to ensure that all witches and wizards achieve great success. Professors Linda Cote and Victoria Chiarelli will also be important parts of your Hogwarts success.  Professor Cote will be teaching some of your reading courses during remote teaching/learning and Chiarelli will be teaching some of your Social Studies and Science courses.   I will be focusing on mathematics instruction during remote teaching/learning but will also be there every step of the way to support students in all of their academic, social, and emotional learning.

Are you wondering if you are prepared for this magical quest?  You'll need to pack of course...and more than just your robes, wand, and cauldron.  You can find a list of essentials by clicking on the "Supplies" tab up top. PLEASE do not fret if you don't have the right supplies.  We can easily make do with what you have.  Honestly, a couple of marble composition notebooks, and pencils will do nicely.  PTO is generously supplying each witch and wizard with whiteboards and a marker.  If you want to ask for a back to school TREAT that is above and beyond, you might consider asking for an INEXPENSIVE stylus for use with your iPads. This really isn't required though!  Most importantly, you'll need to have a sharp mind ready for the problem-solving and the academic challenges that will be the hallmarks of our classroom. How can you prepare your mind for the year ahead?

Continue to prepare by reading.  I hope you are enjoying, some summer reading selections.  I’ve been reading quite a bit this summer. In fact, one of my favorite things about summer is having the time to read more books (and eat more ice cream).  I’ve read all kinds of books this summer including historical fiction, non-fiction, young adult fiction, and fiction.  While a lot of my reading has been for pleasure, a few of my selections have been read in hopes of improving my practice as a teacher. I love to read and have many favorite authors. I've read every Kate DiCamillo book. I think she is my favorite author.  Her books just warm my heart and fill me with hope.  I admit though, I have a few favorite authors!   J.K. Rowling is certainly near the top of my list.   What has been your favorite book of the summer?  I'll want to hear all about it when you return to school! Better yet, you can shoot me an email by clicking on the Contact Prof. Brigham tab.

Also, you can keep your math mind sharp by reviewing your multiplication facts on a pretty regular basis.  A few minutes of review work every couple of days should do the trick.  I know you'll be a more confident math student if you come to school with fact fluency.  Do a little review here and there versus trying to re-learn them all during the last weekend of summer vacation.  It will be way less burdensome this way and you won't ruin those last precious days of vacation with math stress.

Finally, you should RELAX.  Do not worry about heading to Hogwarts.  We will have FUN and you will have a very SUCCESSFUL fourth year.  I promise!  I'm excited about our adventure and the challenge of revealing the magic inside of each of us!

There may be one more OWL before the start of school.  Stay on the look out.  If the OWL is sent...it will contain a challenge.  Are you up for a challenge?  I know you are!

Rest up till September 16 when you'll head to King's Cross Station.  Seek out Platform 9 3/4  (AKA: Professor Brigham's Zoom Room).  Come with your trunk all packed and ready for MAGIC and WONDER.  We depart at 9:00 AM sharp. I just can't wait!

Sincerely,

Professor Brigham
